GamCare Warns of Rising Online Gambling Harm Ahead of World Cup

The UK charity GamCare has reported a sharp increase in people seeking help for online gambling problems, with calls to the National Gambling Helpline reaching their highest level in five years. The warning comes just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a period that experts say often leads to increased betting activity.

According to GamCare, 82% of people contacting the helpline this year about gambling-related issues said their problems were linked to online gambling. The figure represents the highest proportion recorded since 2021 and highlights the growing role of digital gambling platforms in gambling harm across Great Britain.

The charity is particularly concerned about the impact of major sporting events on gambling behavior. With the World Cup taking place across North America, many matches will be played late at night for UK audiences, creating additional opportunities for prolonged online betting sessions. GamCare believes this could increase risks for vulnerable individuals during the tournament.

Research commissioned by the organization suggests younger adults may be especially exposed. Among people aged 18 to 34 who have previously bet during major sporting tournaments, nearly one-third said they find it difficult to avoid gambling when such events take place. A significant number also reported moving from sports betting to higher-risk gambling products, including online casino games.

GamCare Chief Executive Victoria Corbishley said the charity regularly sees demand for support rise during major sports competitions. She noted that many people who eventually develop harmful gambling habits initially begin with sports betting before their behavior escalates into more serious problems. Young adults, she added, appear to be among the groups most at risk this summer.

The charity is encouraging anyone worried about their gambling, or concerned about a friend or family member, to seek support as early as possible. The National Gambling Helpline operates around the clock and provides free, confidential assistance through phone, online chat, and messaging services.

GamCare’s latest figures add to broader concerns about gambling-related harm in the UK, as regulators, charities, and healthcare providers continue to monitor the impact of increasingly accessible online betting products.
