Pirelli Secures Formula 1 Tyre Supply Role Through 2028

Pirelli will remain Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier until the end of the 2028 season after the FIA exercised an option to extend the company’s current agreement by an additional year.

The Italian manufacturer has supplied tyres to all F1 teams since becoming the sport’s sole supplier in 2011. Its latest contract covered the 2025-2027 seasons and included a provision allowing either Formula 1 or the FIA to activate a one-year extension. The governing body confirmed the extension had been agreed jointly with F1 and Pirelli.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem welcomed the decision, describing Pirelli as a long-standing partner that has consistently delivered high levels of performance, innovation and safety to the championship.

He said the extension would provide stability for Formula 1 while ensuring continuity in one of the sport’s most important technical areas.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali also praised the relationship between the series and the tyre manufacturer, highlighting Pirelli’s contributions in performance, technological development and sustainability.

According to Domenicali, the partnership has played a significant role in the modern era of Formula 1, and the extension ensures that collaboration will continue for at least another season.

Pirelli secured its current deal after overcoming competition from Japanese tyre giant Bridgestone during the previous tender process. At the time, speculation suggested the contract might be the company’s final agreement with Formula 1.

However, industry sources indicate Pirelli remains interested in extending its involvement beyond 2028. While other manufacturers are reportedly monitoring future opportunities, the Italian company is said to be open to remaining part of the championship for the long term.

Before a new contract can be awarded, the FIA must launch a formal tender process. Manufacturers wishing to become Formula 1’s tyre supplier submit technical proposals for evaluation by the governing body. Once the FIA assesses the candidates, Formula 1 conducts commercial negotiations that ultimately determine who will secure the supply agreement.

With the latest extension now confirmed, Pirelli’s uninterrupted run as Formula 1’s exclusive tyre provider is set to continue through at least 18 consecutive seasons.
