Australia’s communications regulator has moved to block six more illegal gambling websites as part of its ongoing crackdown on offshore operators targeting local players.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) announced that internet service providers have been asked to block access to the newly identified platforms after investigations found they were operating in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act.
According to the regulator, the latest action is part of a broader enforcement campaign that has been running since November 2019. Since then, more than 1,700 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have either been blocked or withdrawn from the Australian market.
ACMA has repeatedly warned consumers that offshore gambling sites offer none of the protections required under Australia’s licensed gambling framework. Players using unregulated platforms may face problems recovering deposits or winnings, while dispute resolution options are often unavailable.
The regulator said website blocking remains one of several tools being used to disrupt illegal gambling activity in the country. Other measures include investigations, enforcement actions, cooperation with digital platforms, and public awareness campaigns.
Australia has intensified its focus on illegal gambling over the past year, particularly as offshore operators continue to target local users through mirror sites, affiliate marketing, and social media promotions. Regulators have also increased scrutiny of influencers and online personalities accused of advertising unlicensed gambling services.
ACMA encourages consumers to check whether a wagering service is licensed before placing bets and maintains a public register of approved operators.
