Online Casinos Become Denmark’s Biggest Gambling Sector for the First Time

Online casinos have overtaken lotteries to become the largest segment of Denmark’s regulated gambling market, marking a significant milestone since the country partially liberalised its gambling industry in 2012.

According to the Danish Gambling Authority’s latest Spilmarkedet i tal 2025 report, online casinos generated DKK4.31 billion ($1.75 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) during 2025, accounting for 38% of the total gambling market. The figure represents a 12.1% year-on-year increase and a remarkable 139% rise compared to 2012.

Overall, Denmark’s gambling market recorded DKK11.5 billion in GGR in 2025, a modest 1% decline from the previous year. After adjusting figures to 2026 price levels and aligning them with GDP measures, the regulator said the market remains 4.9% below its 2012 baseline. The updated methodology means direct comparisons with previous annual reports should be made with caution.

Lottery products, including Lotto, Klasselotterier and scratch cards, generated DKK3.49 billion, making up 30% of the market. Revenue from this segment fell 6.2% compared to 2024.

Sports betting also experienced a downturn, with GGR dropping 11.5% year-on-year to DKK2.13 billion, representing 19% of the overall market.

Land-based gambling sectors were considerably smaller. Gaming machines generated DKK1.18 billion in revenue, while land-based casinos contributed DKK378 million. Retail bingo, which became a licensed activity from January 2025, added DKK30 million.

The regulator noted that it postponed publication of its updated channelisation report until later in 2026 while additional data is verified. As a result, estimates of activity on unlicensed online gambling sites were not included in this year’s review.
