Sweden’s regulated gambling market generated SEK7.4 billion in turnover during the second quarter of 2026, with online casino and sports betting driving most of the year-on-year growth.
Preliminary figures published by gambling regulator Spelinspektionen show turnover increased 5.1% compared with the same three-month period in 2025. The regulator defines turnover as player stakes after winnings have been paid out.
Commercial online gambling and betting remained by far the largest part of Sweden’s licensed sector, producing just over SEK4.9 billion during the quarter. That represented growth of slightly more than 7% from Q2 2025.
State-run lotteries and gaming machines generated approximately SEK1.43 billion, broadly unchanged from the corresponding period last year. Gambling operated for public-benefit purposes contributed SEK863 million, including around SEK51 million from hall bingo.
Land-based commercial gambling recorded one of the strongest percentage increases. The segment, which largely consists of casino games offered in restaurants, generated SEK73 million, up almost 13% from SEK64 million a year earlier.
Traditional state-operated casino revenue has effectively disappeared from the market figures following the closure of Svenska Spel’s final Casino Cosmopol property in 2025. However, Svenska Spel separately reported a strong second quarter across its remaining operations, describing the period as its best Q2 since Sweden’s gambling market was re-regulated in 2019.
The latest figures also indicate a small decline in participation in Sweden’s national gambling self-exclusion programme. Just under 138,000 people were registered with Spelpaus.se at the end of June, 0.7% fewer than at the end of the first quarter. That follows a 2.6% quarter-on-quarter increase in registered self-exclusions during Q1.
The regulated market continues to face competition from offshore operators. Spelinspektionen estimated Sweden’s online gambling channelisation rate at 84% for 2025, down from 85% in 2024 and 86% in 2023. The regulator’s figures indicate betting retained a substantially higher proportion of activity within the licensed market than online casino.
Spelinspektionen has also intensified its focus on websites targeting Swedish players without a domestic licence. The regulator previously identified affiliate networks, promotional websites and influencers as important channels through which consumers are directed toward unlicensed gambling services.
The Q2 numbers remain preliminary and may be revised as Spelinspektionen continues collecting and analysing market data.
