The Syrian government has stepped up efforts to combat online gambling by restricting access to a number of betting and casino websites targeting users within the country, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Officials said the move was taken in response to complaints received from citizens and is aimed at protecting internet users from activities that are prohibited under Syrian law. Gambling in all major forms, including online casinos, sports betting and other wagering services, has long been banned in Syria, with the exception of a state-run lottery.
In its statement, the ministry confirmed that it had implemented measures to limit access to several gambling and betting websites operating or advertising services to Syrian residents. Authorities described the restrictions as a precautionary step while a dedicated committee completes its review of the platforms and their activities.
The ministry argued that gambling operations violate existing legal provisions and warned of the financial and social risks associated with betting activities. Officials highlighted concerns about potential harm to individuals and families, as well as the possibility of deceptive practices linked to some online gambling services.
As part of the crackdown, Syrian authorities have also contacted major social media platforms, requesting that they prevent gambling-related advertisements from being shown to users in Syria. The government wants to curb the promotion of betting services and reduce the visibility of gambling content online.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said it will continue monitoring the digital environment, reviewing complaints and identifying potential violations of gambling laws. Officials added that further action could be taken where necessary to maintain what they described as a safe and reliable online space.
The latest measures reflect Syria’s ongoing policy of prohibiting gambling activities and demonstrate the government’s intention to strengthen enforcement against online betting operators seeking to reach local users.
