UK Gambling Commission Pushes Back Deposit Limit Rule Deadline to September 2026

UK gambling operators will receive extra time to comply with upcoming deposit limit reforms after the Gambling Commission agreed to delay part of the rollout following industry feedback.

The regulator confirmed that the second phase of the new rules, originally scheduled for June 30, 2026, will now take effect on September 30, 2026. Operators reportedly requested more time to complete the technical adjustments needed to meet the updated standards.

The changes are part of a broader effort by the Gambling Commission to standardise how deposit limits are presented and applied across online gambling platforms in Great Britain.

Under the revised framework, only limits based purely on the amount a player deposits into their account will be allowed to use the term “deposit limit.” The Commission said the move is designed to eliminate confusion caused by operators using different systems, including “net deposit limits,” where withdrawals could effectively increase a player’s remaining deposit allowance.

The regulator first launched a consultation on the issue in March 2025 as part of wider consumer protection reforms linked to the Gambling Act review.

Several measures are already due to come into force earlier. From October 31, 2025, operators must prompt customers to set financial limits before making their first deposit. Gambling firms will also need to make those controls easier to access and adjust.

The Commission has argued that clearer and more consistent limit tools will help customers better manage gambling spending and reduce the risk of harm. Industry researchers previously highlighted concerns that inconsistent terminology and preset limit suggestions could confuse users or encourage higher spending patterns.
