Billam-Smith Stops Rozicki in Seven-Round War at Zuffa Boxing’s UK Debut

Chris Billam-Smith secured a hard-fought technical knockout victory over Ryan Rozicki after seven punishing rounds in the main event of Zuffa Boxing’s first UK show in Bournemouth.

The former WBO cruiserweight champion finally broke through late in the seventh round, landing a series of heavy hooks that forced Rozicki back to his corner. The Canadian’s team immediately threw in the towel, ending a brutal contest that had the crowd at Bournemouth International Centre on its feet.

Both fighters required medical attention after the fight, with Rozicki receiving oxygen in the ring before he and Billam-Smith embraced to applause from the packed arena. Zuffa Boxing president Dana White later confirmed both men were taken to hospital following the bout.

The action was relentless from the opening bell. Rozicki, fighting outside Canada for the first time, applied constant pressure but was warned for head use in the first round and deducted a point in the second. Despite suffering cuts above both eyes, he continued to push forward and landed several damaging shots of his own.

Billam-Smith gradually took control as the fight wore on. The Bournemouth fighter unleashed a barrage of hooks in the sixth round and finished strongly in the seventh, forcing the stoppage. All three judges had him comfortably ahead on the scorecards before the fight was ended, with scores of 68-64, 68-64 and 69-63.

The victory improves Billam-Smith’s professional record to 22 wins from 24 fights and marks a successful debut under the Zuffa Boxing banner.

Saturday’s event was the promotion’s first show in Britain since launching earlier this year under UFC president Dana White. The card went ahead despite legal threats from British promoter Boxxer, which claimed several fighters were competing without its authorisation.

The Bournemouth crowd also welcomed a number of boxing and combat sports figures, including Conor Benn, Derek Chisora, David Adeleye, WWE stars Finn Balor and Joe Hendry, and UFC flyweight Lone’er Kavanagh.

Attention will now turn to Billam-Smith’s next move. A potential showdown with Australian cruiserweight Jai Opetaia remains one of the most intriguing options for Zuffa Boxing, although the British fighter may need time to recover after a demanding and physically draining contest.
