Messi Family Issues Privacy Appeal as Father’s Health Concerns Come to Light

Lionel Messi’s family has released a statement addressing growing speculation about the health of his father, Jorge Messi, confirming that he is currently undergoing medical treatment and recovering under professional supervision.

The statement, issued on Thursday, said Jorge Messi is facing a health-related issue but is making positive progress.

“At this time, he is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing favourably within the condition he is experiencing,” the family said.

The update follows widespread attention after Messi appeared emotional during Argentina’s opening World Cup match against Algeria earlier this week. The 38-year-old captain broke down in tears after scoring his first goal in a 3-0 victory before completing a hat-trick.

Messi’s three goals saw him draw level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose as the joint-leading scorer in World Cup history.

Speaking after the match, Messi explained that his emotions were linked to personal circumstances rather than football.

“Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football,” he said.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my team-mates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”

In their statement, the Messi family criticised what they described as insensitive reporting and speculation surrounding Jorge Messi’s condition.

They stressed that only close relatives have accurate information about his health and urged the public not to trust claims that do not come directly from the family or official channels.

The family also called for greater respect and discretion, saying that personal health matters should not become the subject of rumours or excessive media attention.

“We ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity,” the statement said, while thanking supporters for their messages of concern and goodwill.

Argentina will continue their World Cup campaign against Austria on 22 June before facing Jordan in their final group-stage match on 28 June.
