Ryan Garner fulfilled a lifelong ambition in front of his hometown supporters on Saturday night, defeating Michael Magnesi to claim the WBC interim super-featherweight title at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
Backed by a crowd of more than 10,000 fans, the 28-year-old produced an energetic and disciplined performance over 12 rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory. The judges scored the contest 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109 in Garner’s favour.
The win positions Garner as the leading challenger for the full WBC super-featherweight championship currently held by O’Shaquie Foster.
Making a dramatic entrance to the sound of Seven Nation Army, Garner was met by a raucous reception from the home crowd before immediately taking control of the fight. The Southampton fighter pressed forward from the opening bell, forcing Italy’s Magnesi onto the back foot and engaging in a series of intense exchanges at close range.
The bout was fought at a relentless pace, with both men willing to trade punches throughout. Garner consistently landed the cleaner and more eye-catching shots, including a sharp one-two in the second round that drew acknowledgement from his opponent.
A short left hand in the fourth round snapped Magnesi’s head back and sparked a huge reaction from the packed stadium. Garner continued to dictate much of the action and enjoyed one of his strongest periods in the ninth round, connecting with a left hook before landing several clean follow-up punches.
Magnesi remained dangerous until the final stages and briefly troubled Garner in the 10th round with a powerful overhand right that momentarily halted the home fighter’s momentum. However, Garner regained control, avoided any late drama and celebrated with supporters when the final bell sounded.
After the victory, Garner praised the backing he received from Southampton fans and highlighted his ambition to pursue major opportunities in the division while providing for his family.
It was also a successful night for several other local fighters. Light-heavyweight Lewis Edmondson defeated Lyndon Arthur over 10 rounds to capture the vacant WBA International title.
Unbeaten super-middleweight prospect Taylor Bevan improved his professional record to 9-0 after earning a majority-decision victory over Ryszard Lewicki. The contest marked the first time Bevan had gone the full distance as a professional.
Earlier in the evening, Bradley Goldsmith defeated Brad Pauls to claim the IBF International middleweight title.
