Spain Sweats on Nico Williams Fitness After Injury Blow Against Uruguay

Spain are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of winger Nico Williams after he suffered a muscle injury during their 1-0 World Cup victory over Uruguay, with the Athletic Club forward expected to miss at least the Round of 32.

The 23-year-old was hurt late in the match following a challenge from Uruguay midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz, who received a yellow card for the tackle. Moments later, Uruguay’s Agustin Canobbio was sent off after a reckless challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.

The result secured Spain’s place in the knockout stage while eliminating Uruguay, but the celebrations were overshadowed by Williams’ latest injury setback.

Speaking on social media, Williams described the moment as “one of the worst days of my life” after another physical problem in what has already been a difficult season.

He said he believed the challenge that caused the injury was avoidable, accusing De la Cruz of acting out of frustration after Uruguay’s disappointing exit. Williams called the tackle “completely unnecessary” but insisted the setback would not stop him.

Williams has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign at Athletic Club and featured only as a substitute in all three of Spain’s group-stage matches before being forced off again.

The Spanish Football Federation confirmed the winger has suffered a moderate muscle injury. While he is expected to miss Spain’s upcoming Round of 32 fixture, medical staff have not ruled out a return later in the tournament if his recovery progresses well.
