Harry Kane’s Late Double Saves England From Shock World Cup Exit

England survived a major World Cup scare as Harry Kane scored twice in the closing stages to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over DR Congo and send Thomas Tuchel’s side into the last 16.

The Three Lions appeared to be heading for one of the most embarrassing defeats in their World Cup history after Brian Cipenga’s early goal put DR Congo ahead in Atlanta. Despite dominating possession, England struggled to find a breakthrough, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivering an outstanding performance to frustrate the tournament favourites.

England’s problems nearly worsened just before half-time when Yoane Wissa struck the post from close range after an open-goal opportunity, missing the chance to double DR Congo’s advantage. Mpasi had already produced excellent saves to deny Jude Bellingham and Kane, keeping England under intense pressure.

With time running out, England finally found their lifeline in the 75th minute. Substitute Anthony Gordon delivered a precise cross that Kane powered home with a commanding header to level the score and shift the momentum.

Kane then completed the turnaround four minutes from full-time with a moment of individual brilliance. Collecting the ball on the edge of the penalty area, the captain spun away from his marker before driving a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner, leaving Mpasi with no chance.

Gordon’s introduction proved decisive, as the winger played a key role in creating both goals after coming off the bench. Kane, meanwhile, moved on to five goals at this World Cup, once again proving decisive when England needed him most.

The victory keeps England’s tournament alive, but it also exposed significant weaknesses. Tuchel’s side looked disorganised for long periods, struggled defensively and lacked creativity until Kane inspired the late comeback.

England now travel to Mexico City for a last-16 clash against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Monday, 6 July. While the dramatic comeback secured progression, the performance suggested England will need a significant improvement if they are to continue their World Cup campaign.
