Everton have strengthened their midfield by completing the signing of Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough on a five-year contract.
The 24-year-old joins David Moyes’ side in a transfer reportedly worth an initial £16.5 million, with performance-related add-ons potentially increasing the total value to £25 million. Hackney becomes Everton’s latest summer addition as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Hackney arrives after an outstanding campaign with Middlesbrough, where he was named the Championship Player of the Year. A product of the club’s academy, he established himself as one of the division’s standout midfielders thanks to his passing range, composure on the ball and ability to drive play from deep.
Everton had faced competition for his signature, including interest from Crystal Palace, but the midfielder opted for a move to Merseyside after discussions with Moyes. The manager’s reputation for developing Championship talent and the club’s long-term plans reportedly played a major role in Hackney’s decision.
The move marks the next step in Hackney’s career after making more than 80 Championship appearances across the past two seasons. He is expected to compete for a regular starting role as Everton prepare for their first full campaign at their new stadium.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, lose one of their most influential players after failing to secure promotion, with Hackney entering the final year of his contract before the transfer was agreed.
