Oleksandr Usyk is considering a farewell fight against former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, with discussions already taking place over a potential major event in the United States.
The unbeaten Ukrainian recently gave up his WBA ‘Super’, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles but confirmed that he has not retired from boxing. Instead, the 39-year-old is planning one final appearance in the ring.
Usyk’s team has revealed that Wilder is currently viewed as the preferred opponent for what could become the last fight of his career. The American’s representatives have also indicated that the former champion would be interested if an official offer arrives.
The possible bout could involve Zuffa Boxing, the new boxing project led by UFC president Dana White and supported by Saudi investment. The organisation is aiming to build a different promotional structure in the sport, including recognising its own champions instead of focusing on traditional sanctioning-body titles.
Usyk remains undefeated with 25 victories and is considered one of the greatest fighters of his era. He became undisputed champion at both cruiserweight and heavyweight and most recently stopped kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven in May.
After that victory, Usyk was expected to defend his WBC title against interim champion Agit Kabayel but decided to vacate his belts. Kabayel has since been promoted to full champion status.
Some fans have pushed for a rematch with Verhoeven after the Dutch kickboxing legend gave Usyk a difficult contest before being stopped in the 11th round. However, the Ukrainian appears more focused on ending his career with a high-profile clash against Wilder.
Wilder, 40, returned to winning ways in April with a split-decision victory over Derek Chisora, improving his professional record to 45 wins from 50 fights. Known for his devastating punching power and 43 knockout victories, the American remains one of the biggest names in the division despite a decline following his trilogy with Tyson Fury.
The United States is currently considered the most likely location for Usyk’s final bout, although no date, venue, broadcaster or promotional agreement has been confirmed.
