Arsenal are finalising a deal to sign goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds United.
The Gunners had been monitoring the French goalkeeper as they looked to strengthen their options between the posts, and an agreement has now been reached. Meslier visited Arsenal’s training base in Hertfordshire on Tuesday with his representatives to complete the final details and undergo a medical.
The 26-year-old is available without a transfer fee after his Leeds contract expired this summer. Meslier had previously been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper but lost his starting role before leaving Elland Road.
His arrival comes as Arsenal assess their goalkeeping situation ahead of the new season, with uncertainty surrounding the future of current back-up keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
For now, Meslier is expected to join as the club’s third-choice option behind David Raya and Kepa. However, if the Spanish goalkeeper moves on, the former Leeds player could become Raya’s main deputy.
The transfer is also set to impact Arsenal’s younger goalkeepers, with teenager Tommy Setford expected to leave on loan in search of regular playing time.
