Henderson Could Still Feature for England After Surgery on Broken Arm

Jordan Henderson has not been ruled out of England’s World Cup campaign despite having surgery on a broken arm.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder suffered the unusual injury after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16 at the Azteca Stadium. Henderson, who did not play in the match, fell awkwardly while trying to jump over the advertising boards as the squad celebrated with supporters.

He was later carried away from the pitch on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Henderson confirmed on social media on Wednesday that he had undergone surgery in Kansas City, where England are based during the tournament.

Although a return is considered unlikely, England are still exploring whether Henderson could be included in future matchday squads and possibly play with a cast if the team progress further.

Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers praised Henderson’s influence, describing him as “the heartbeat of the group” and saying the squad have not ruled out his involvement.

Henderson will remain with England for the rest of the tournament. He has made one appearance so far, coming on as a substitute in the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama, which made him the first England men’s player to appear at four World Cups.

England’s players have regularly gathered in front of fans after victories to sing with them, but Thomas Tuchel is expected to tell the squad not to jump over advertising boards again following Henderson’s injury.

Meanwhile, Marc Guehi is expected to be fit for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway despite missing training on Wednesday. His absence was precautionary and linked to muscular fatigue.

Declan Rice also sat out the session because of the neural hamstring and lower-back issue that has affected him during the tournament, but he is also expected to be available. Reece James remains a possible option after a hamstring injury sustained against Ghana on 23 June.
