York City Part Ways With Promotion-Winning Boss Stuart Maynard Ahead of League Two Return

York City have dismissed manager Stuart Maynard just three months after he led the club back into the English Football League, ending a decade-long absence with a memorable National League title triumph.

The club confirmed the decision in a statement, saying the board had reached it after identifying a “difference in direction and vision for the football club.” York acknowledged the move would come as a surprise to many supporters but insisted it believes the change will strengthen the club’s long-term future.

Maynard took charge in August 2025 after replacing Adam Hinshelwood and quickly transformed the Minstermen into promotion contenders. His side secured the National League title in dramatic fashion in April, rescuing a point against closest rivals Rochdale with a 103rd-minute equaliser. The late goal denied Rochdale the championship and ensured York finished the campaign on 108 points.

Despite delivering one of the club’s most successful modern seasons, the board said its decision was based on differing long-term ambitions rather than recent results. York stated that while not everyone would understand or agree with the move immediately, it remained confident the change was in the club’s best interests and aligned with its plans for sustained success.

The managerial change comes just days before York begin life back in League Two. The Minstermen will host Crawley Town in the preliminary round of the Carabao Cup on 3 August before opening their league campaign at home against Bristol Rovers on 15 August.

York have not yet announced who will take charge of the team for the upcoming season, with preparations continuing ahead of their return to the EFL.
