Lindsey Takes Over at York City After Surprise Managerial Switch

York City have named Scott Lindsey as their new head coach just one day after dismissing Stuart Maynard, despite the latter guiding the club to the National League title and promotion back to the English Football League last season.

The club announced Lindsey’s appointment following Sunday’s decision to part ways with Maynard, citing a difference in long-term direction and vision for the football club.

The 54-year-old arrives with extensive EFL experience, having previously managed Crawley Town, Swindon Town and MK Dons. Lindsey enjoyed a successful first spell at Crawley, leading the club to promotion to League One in 2024. However, his second stint ended in March after a 10-match winless run in League Two left the team hovering just above the relegation zone.

In an immediate twist, Lindsey’s first match in charge of York will come against his former club, Crawley Town, in the EFL Cup preliminary round on Monday, 3 August.

York’s decision follows the surprise departure of Maynard, who had only taken charge last August after owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla dismissed Adam Hinshelwood. Although that move initially raised eyebrows, Maynard delivered a remarkable campaign by guiding the Minstermen to the National League title with 108 points, securing an end to the club’s decade-long absence from the EFL.

Promotion was sealed in dramatic fashion after York scored a late equaliser against Rochdale on the final day, denying their rivals the automatic promotion place and clinching the championship.

Alongside Lindsey, York have appointed Joao Alves as assistant head coach, while first-team coach Gary Elphick will remain on the coaching staff after serving under both Hinshelwood and Maynard.

York begin their League Two campaign at home against Bristol Rovers on 15 August, with Lindsey now tasked with building on the momentum created by last season’s promotion success.
