Spain defender Marc Cucurella has fulfilled a promise he made during the World Cup celebrations by getting a tattoo of head coach Luis de la Fuente following the nation’s triumph in the tournament.
The 28-year-old, who completed a £52 million move from Chelsea to Real Madrid in June, unveiled the new tattoo on social media after Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final earlier this month.
The design features a portrait of De la Fuente holding the World Cup trophy alongside the number 26. Sharing photos and a video of the tattoo process, Cucurella captioned the post simply: “Promise kept.”
De la Fuente had joked after the final that he fully expected his players to follow through on their pledge.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, the Spain boss laughed that the squad might have regretted the promise, but added he was proud they intended to keep it. He also joked that he was not “so terribly ugly” that the tattoo would need to be hidden.
Cucurella has become known for his unique traditions and personality away from the pitch. During the World Cup, he carried his wife’s pyjama top as a lucky charm throughout the tournament. The defender has also previously revealed that he keeps his trademark long, curly hair because it helps his child easily spot him while watching matches.
