Chelsea have completed the signing of France international Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £52 million, with the central defender signing a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The 26-year-old arrives after an impressive season at Selhurst Park, having joined Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial £15.5 million. Lacroix quickly established himself as a key figure under Oliver Glasner, making 55 appearances across all competitions and helping Palace lift the UEFA Conference League – the club’s first major European trophy.
On the international stage, Lacroix earned three appearances for France during the 2026 World Cup, including the third-place play-off against England, as Les Bleus finished fourth.
Speaking after completing the move, the defender expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea’s new era under head coach Xabi Alonso. He said he is eager to work alongside teammates such as Reece James and Morgan Rogers and hopes to help write a successful new chapter for the club.
Lacroix becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Rogers and Marco Palestra. Winger Geovany Quenda and striker Emmanuel Emegha also officially joined this month after agreements were reached last year, while negotiations continue over potential moves for Brighton forward Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson.
Chelsea had identified central defence as a priority after an inconsistent campaign exposed a lack of physicality, leadership and reliability at the back. Although Manchester City’s John Stones and Como defender Jacobo Ramon were among the players considered, Lacroix emerged as the club’s preferred option throughout the recruitment process.
Talks with Crystal Palace over the transfer fee and personal terms proved lengthy, but the defender approved the switch after France’s World Cup campaign concluded.
His arrival reflects a noticeable shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy following a disappointing 10th-place Premier League finish and a trophyless season. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali recently indicated the club would refine its transfer policy by adding greater experience to complement a talented young core that includes Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill.
Lacroix is the oldest player Chelsea have signed since the current ownership group took charge, underlining that change in approach. The club also made an unsuccessful attempt to sign 34-year-old Granit Xhaka from Sunderland earlier this summer, another indication that proven experience has become a greater priority.
Together with the £117 million signing of 24-year-old Morgan Rogers, Lacroix’s arrival fulfils Chelsea’s promise to strengthen the squad with established first-team players capable of making an immediate impact under Alonso.
