Pochettino Extends USMNT Stay Until 2030 After World Cup Run

Mauricio Pochettino will remain head coach of the United States men’s national team through 2030 after agreeing a new long-term contract with US Soccer.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager, who took charge in September 2024, guided the United States to the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As tournament co-hosts, the Americans topped their group with victories over Paraguay and Australia before defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32. Their campaign ended with a 4-1 loss to Belgium.

Alongside the contract extension, Pochettino and his coaching staff will take on expanded responsibilities across US Soccer. Their new role includes supporting the federation’s wider football development strategy, covering youth national teams, player pathways, coaching education, collaboration with professional leagues and other technical areas.

The federation said the broader remit is designed to strengthen the long-term development of football in the United States beyond the senior men’s team.

One of the tournament’s most talked-about incidents involved striker Folarin Balogun, who was sent off during the win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Despite the dismissal, he avoided suspension after an intervention from US President Donald Trump.

US Soccer also praised the progress made under Pochettino, highlighting the strong team culture established since his arrival. Federation president Cindy Parlow Cone said the players’ trust in one another and in the coaching staff was reflected in the team’s performances at the World Cup, adding that the organization believes the current coaching group is well placed to lead the national team into the future.
