Wouter Vrancken secured his first victory as Heart of Midlothian head coach as his side produced an impressive attacking performance to beat Dundee United 4-0 at Tynecastle Park.
The Belgian had endured four consecutive defeats since taking charge, including a bruising 6-1 loss to Benfica just four days earlier. Hearts responded emphatically, however, combining an early burst of goals with a much sharper cutting edge in the final third.
Tom Renaud set the tone after only four minutes. Having also scored in Lisbon, the French midfielder collected possession around 30 yards from goal and unleashed a superb strike into the top corner.
Hearts quickly doubled their advantage from the penalty spot. Daniel Bennie fouled Jamie McCart following a corner, allowing Calvin Miller to step forward and convert for 2-0.
The hosts almost added another when Braga turned inside the area and struck the post, but Dundee United gradually began to gain control and created a sustained spell of pressure before half-time.
Jim Goodwin’s team moved the ball effectively through midfield, with captain Dylan Tait increasingly influential and Jesse Randall providing an attacking outlet on the left. Despite their improvement, United were unable to turn possession into goals, with Hearts’ makeshift defence repeatedly surviving the danger.
United continued to push after the restart, but Hearts punished their lack of efficiency with a third goal. Braga found space and drove a low finish beyond goalkeeper Jack Walton to put the result firmly in the hosts’ hands.
Vrancken’s side were now playing with confidence and soon made it 4-0. Josh McPake combined well with Braga before finishing into the bottom corner to register his first Hearts goal.
The result represented a significant response from a Hearts team that had entered the match under pressure following a difficult opening run. Their previous defeats included a 4-0 loss to Sturm Graz, a late 2-1 setback against Aberdeen and the heavy European defeat by Benfica.
Against United, many of the elements Vrancken has been attempting to introduce finally came together. Braga was heavily involved in the attacking combinations, while McPake and Sabah Kerjota offered a consistent threat from wide areas. Renaud also delivered another encouraging performance in midfield.
Just as importantly, Hearts recorded a clean sheet despite being without six first-team defenders because of injuries and suspensions. Midfielder Oisin McEntee partnered McCart in central defence, and the improvised back line held firm whenever United threatened.
For Dundee United, the scoreline was particularly harsh given their response after falling two goals behind. They continued trying to build attacks and enjoyed promising spells, especially during the latter stages of the first half.
Their biggest problem was a lack of decisiveness around the Hearts penalty area. Tait helped dictate possession and Randall regularly caused problems from the flank, but United failed to produce the final touch needed to turn their pressure into a comeback.
Hearts had no such difficulty. Four goals, a clean sheet and a first victory under Vrancken provided the emphatic response the new head coach needed after a challenging start to his tenure.
