Aston Villa Turn to Harwood-Bellis After Southampton Reject £18m Offer

Aston Villa have stepped up their search for defensive reinforcements after Southampton rejected an offer worth around £18m plus add-ons for Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Villa are reshaping their squad following a busy summer of departures, with England defender Ezri Konsa expected to complete a move to Arsenal for a fee exceeding £50m. Harwood-Bellis has emerged as one of the club’s main options to strengthen the centre of defence.

Southampton are understood to value the 24-year-old at approximately £25m and have so far resisted Villa’s opening approach.

Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton from Manchester City in 2023, initially on loan, before establishing himself as a regular part of the first-team squad. He came through City’s academy system but did not make a senior competitive appearance for the club.

The defender also has one senior England cap, which came against the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League in 2024.

Southampton finished fourth in the Championship last season but missed out on the play-offs following the Spygate controversy, leaving the club facing another campaign outside the Premier League.

Villa, meanwhile, have undergone major changes since winning the Europa League in May. Youri Tielemans has moved to Manchester United, Morgan Rogers has joined Chelsea and Lucas Digne has signed for Paris Saint-Germain.

There has also been speculation over the futures of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Ollie Watkins, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer.

The club has already been active in the transfer market. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri arrived this week, adding to earlier summer deals for midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.

With Konsa now close to leaving, Villa are expected to continue pursuing another central defender, although Southampton’s asking price means an improved offer may be required to bring Harwood-Bellis to Villa Park.
