Leeds United produced a commanding display at Elland Road to sweep aside Newcastle United 4-1 and move up to third place in the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s side did most of the damage during a devastating spell late in the first half, scoring three times in 14 minutes before adding another after the break.
Leeds opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Ao Tanaka’s effort took two deflections, first off Sean Steur and then Lewis Miley, before dropping into the bottom corner. The final touch meant the goal was recorded as a Miley own goal.
The hosts struck again less than three minutes later. Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to have headed home Leeds’ second, but Jayden Bogle got the decisive contact to make it 2-0.
Calvert-Lewin did not have to wait long for his own goal. In first-half stoppage time, the striker finished calmly across goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek to put Leeds firmly in control. It was his eighth career goal against Newcastle.
Newcastle failed to mount a response after the interval, and substitute Noah Okafor extended the advantage by converting Leeds’ fourth.
Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation for the visitors in the 90th minute, but it did little to change the outcome of a one-sided contest.
The victory lifted Leeds to eight points and third in the Premier League table, four points behind defending champions and current leaders Arsenal.
For Newcastle, the heavy defeat capped a difficult evening in which they struggled to contain Leeds’ intensity and were punished repeatedly by the home side’s sharp attacking play.
