Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is expected to withdraw from England’s squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures after suffering a minor injury, ruling him out of the four-match international break.
The 24-year-old had been recalled by Thomas Tuchel after missing out on England’s World Cup squad. His return offered an opportunity to re-establish himself in the national team, with Tuchel previously making clear that Palmer needed to demonstrate his value and justify his selection.
England begin their international schedule against world champions Spain at Wembley on 26 September before travelling to the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October. They conclude the break with a home fixture against the Czechs on 6 October.
Palmer’s expected withdrawal follows Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, in which he completed the full 90 minutes.
Despite missing the World Cup and spending the summer away from international football, Palmer has made an encouraging start to the domestic season. He has started six of Chelsea’s seven matches, completed 90 minutes on five occasions and contributed four goals and two assists.
However, his latest injury adds to concerns surrounding his fitness after a recurring groin problem disrupted his 2025-26 campaign. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, now in charge of Manchester City, had previously expressed frustration over the persistent nature of the issue.
Palmer’s most recent England appearance came in March, when he featured in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Japan. His expected absence from the upcoming fixtures will delay his opportunity to return to international action under Tuchel.
