Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following an altercation with a Portsmouth supporter, although a separate police investigation has ended without further action.
The incident occurred during Cardiff’s 2-0 Championship defeat at Fratton Park on 5 September 2026, when the Poland international became involved in a confrontation with a fan while attempting to retrieve the ball from the crowd.
The FA alleges that Bielik, 28, behaved improperly around the 71st minute of the match. The defender has until Friday, 25 September, to respond to the charge.
Hampshire Police, who were alerted to the incident during the game and subsequently opened an investigation, confirmed that the case had been resolved through an out-of-court disposal agreed upon by all parties.
Officers reached their decision after speaking with the complainant and examining the available evidence. Bielik provided an apology as part of the resolution, and police confirmed that the matter was closed with no further action planned.
The FA’s disciplinary proceedings remain separate from the completed police investigation.
Footage circulating on social media appeared to show Bielik grabbing a young Portsmouth supporter around the upper body during the confrontation. Several home fans reacted with gestures suggesting they believed the player had grabbed the supporter by the throat.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy subsequently claimed that Bielik had been struck in the face during the encounter.
The disruption continued when another Portsmouth supporter threw a ball at Cardiff defender Perry Ng, striking him on the head. Both supporters involved in the incidents were removed from the stadium.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff’s players following the match. However, after reviewing footage of the confrontation in the following days, he expressed anger over the position in which he believed the incident had placed him.
Bielik now awaits the outcome of the FA disciplinary process, with his response to the misconduct charge due on 25 September.
