Israel forward Saied Abu Farchi was sent off shortly after scoring in a 3-1 Nations League defeat by Austria, with his corner-flag celebration resulting in a second yellow card.
The 20-year-old Colorado Rapids player headed Israel level in the 55th minute at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz, cancelling out Romano Schmid’s first-half opener. Moments later, however, Abu Farchi removed the corner flag, balanced it across his hand and briefly raised it above his head.
Reports offered different interpretations of the gesture, with some describing it as resembling the firing of a weapon and others suggesting it was intended to imitate a snooker or pool shot. Reuters reported that the celebration led directly to his dismissal.
Abu Farchi had already been booked and was shown a second yellow before being sent off, leaving Israel to finish the match with 10 players.
UEFA’s disciplinary rules allow cautions for provocative, derisory or inflammatory gestures, while interfering with or removing a corner flag can also result in a booking. The exact reason recorded for Abu Farchi’s second yellow has not yet been publicly clarified.
Israel coach Ran Ben-Shimon said Abu Farchi has regularly used the same celebration during his career, including in Major League Soccer, without previously being punished. He described the incident as a mistake by a young player who had not expected the celebration to result in a caution.
Austria capitalised late in the match, with Philipp Mwene and Sasa Kalajdzic scoring after Abu Farchi’s dismissal to secure a 3-1 victory. UEFA’s official fixture records confirm the result in the opening round of the 2026-27 Nations League campaign.
The incident came during a politically sensitive period around Israel’s international fixtures. Israel are due to face the Republic of Ireland twice during the Nations League campaign, with the matches scheduled at neutral venues amid calls from some campaigners for Ireland to boycott the games.
The wider debate has been shaped by the war in Gaza, which followed the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023. The conflict has since remained a significant backdrop to Israel’s participation in international sport.
Israel’s next Nations League fixture is against the Republic of Ireland on 27 September, while Austria are scheduled to face Kosovo on the same day.
