Jurgen Klopp is still searching for his first victory as Germany head coach after Greece claimed a historic 1-0 Nations League win in Augsburg.
Germany controlled much of the match but were punished in the 74th minute when Dimitrios Kourbelis struck from the edge of the penalty area. His effort took a deflection off Joshua Kimmich before finding the net and ultimately deciding the contest.
The defeat came in Klopp’s second match in charge after Germany opened his tenure with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands on Thursday.
Germany made several changes to the starting line-up and introduced Florian Wirtz from the bench, but their possession and attacking pressure failed to produce an equaliser.
Klopp acknowledged afterwards that the squad remains in the early stages of adapting to his methods, with the players having spent only a week together. However, he was frustrated that Germany failed to take anything from a match they largely controlled.
The result marked Greece’s first victory over Germany in 11 meetings. Before Sunday, Greece had recorded three draws and seven defeats against the four-time world champions.
Klopp, 59, signed a four-year contract in July after replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down following Germany’s surprise defeat to Paraguay in the last 32 of the World Cup.
Germany have now gone four matches without a win since beating Ivory Coast in their second group match at the tournament.
For Greece, the victory continued an excellent start to their Nations League campaign. After defeating Serbia on Thursday, they returned to the top of Group 2 and strengthened their position in the race for a quarter-final place.
Germany were ranked 12th in the world entering the match, while Greece sat 41st. By beating Klopp’s side, Greece secured their highest-ranked scalp since their memorable victory over fourth-ranked England at Wembley in 2024.
