Merino Double Sends Spain Into Nations League Quarter-Finals

Mikel Merino scored twice after coming off the bench as Spain recovered from an early setback to defeat Croatia 2-1 and secure their place in the Nations League quarter-finals.

Spain arrived seeking an 11th consecutive victory, but Croatia made the stronger start and moved ahead after 17 minutes. Ivan Perisic found space inside the area and headed home to give the visitors a deserved advantage.

The response was particularly notable after Croatia’s heavy 7-0 defeat by England in their previous Nations League match. Their improved first-half performance earned recognition from the crowd as they took a one-goal lead into the interval.

Spain increased the pressure after the restart and found an equaliser in the 61st minute. Dani Olmo reacted quickly to a poor defensive clearance and supplied Merino, who finished clinically to bring the world champions level.

Luis de la Fuente’s side continued to push forward, with Lamine Yamal having a goalbound effort blocked as Croatia came under growing pressure.

Croatia’s task became significantly harder late in the match when Perisic was dismissed. After seeing a powerful attempt saved, the 37-year-old picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Marc Cucurella.

Spain made the numerical advantage count two minutes from time. Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi played an excellent ball into the path of club team-mate Merino, who produced a composed finish to complete the comeback.

The victory keeps Spain top of League A Group 3 and confirms their progress to the quarter-finals. They sit three points ahead of England, who strengthened their own position with a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
