Alex Albon will remain with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season after agreeing a one-year extension with the team.
The 30-year-old Thai driver, who was born in Britain, joined Williams in 2022 and has since become the longest-serving driver in the team’s history.
His future had come under greater scrutiny during a difficult 2026 campaign. Williams entered the season hoping to build on an unexpected fifth-place finish in the 2025 constructors’ championship, but the team has instead struggled following Formula 1’s major regulation overhaul.
After 11 races, Williams sits ninth in the standings as the championship prepares to resume following the summer break.
Despite the downturn, Albon has chosen to continue with the project led by team principal James Vowles. Since taking charge in early 2023, Vowles has overseen extensive changes behind the scenes with the aim of returning Williams to regular competitiveness.
Albon’s options elsewhere were also limited. Seats at the leading four teams were unavailable, meaning any move would likely have involved another midfield operation. Remaining with Williams therefore offers continuity while giving him the chance to see whether the team’s recent restructuring produces stronger results next season.
The short-term nature of the agreement also leaves Albon free to reassess his position after 2027 if Williams fails to make the progress it expects.
Albon has played a central role in the team’s rebuilding programme and has become one of its most important figures both on and off the track. Williams sees his extension as an important sign of stability at a time when results have fallen short of expectations.
The new deal gives both sides another season to determine whether the long-term changes introduced under Vowles can translate into a return towards the front of the Formula 1 grid.
