Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli insists he still has plenty to prove despite making a commanding start to the 2026 Formula 1 season and opening up a significant lead in the championship standings.
The 19-year-old Italian has emerged as the standout performer of the campaign, winning five of the opening six grands prix and establishing a 66-point advantage over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes team-mate George Russell sits a further two points back after a difficult run of results heading into this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Despite his dominant form, Antonelli says he remains focused on his own development rather than the growing talk about a potential first world title.
The teenager believes there are still major questions about how much further he can improve and how much untapped potential remains in his driving. While his results have transformed him into the championship favourite, he says he is still discovering the limits of his abilities.
Antonelli’s confidence today stands in sharp contrast to the struggles he experienced during parts of his rookie campaign last year. A difficult European stretch, marked by several incidents and inconsistent performances, left him questioning himself at the time.
Looking back, however, he now views that period as one of the most valuable experiences of his career.
The Italian said the challenges helped him understand himself better both as a driver and as a person. Rather than damaging his long-term confidence, the setbacks accelerated his growth and prepared him for the demands of leading a championship campaign.
Antonelli finished seventh in the standings last season, ending the year three places and 169 points behind Russell. The Briton secured two race victories, while Antonelli’s best results were podium finishes in Canada, Brazil and Las Vegas.
He was also regularly outpaced by Russell in qualifying, beating his team-mate only five times and trailing by an average of 0.24 seconds over the season.
A year later, the balance has shifted dramatically.
Antonelli currently leads their qualifying battle 5-4 and holds an average advantage of 0.110 seconds. He credits the turnaround largely to experience, saying a full season in Formula 1 has helped him better understand race weekends, track evolution, energy management and how to work effectively with the team.
While many drivers would feel pressure carrying such a large championship lead, Antonelli says he is deliberately avoiding thoughts about the title fight.
Instead, he is concentrating on the process, enjoying each race weekend and extracting the maximum performance from the car, believing the final standings will take care of themselves if he continues executing at a high level.
Russell, meanwhile, admits the championship is already slipping away. Although he feels a series of setbacks have cost him valuable points, including problems in Monaco, he believes that even with average luck he would likely still trail Antonelli.
The 28-year-old says his focus has shifted away from the standings and toward simply enjoying racing, driving fast and delivering the performances he knows he is capable of producing.
Antonelli’s remarkable rise has earned praise from some of Formula 1’s biggest names.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso described the Mercedes driver as an exceptional talent, highlighting his ability to handle a dominant car, win races consistently and cope with the pressure that comes from leading both races and the championship.
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen was equally impressed. The Dutchman, who remains the youngest grand prix winner in F1 history, praised Antonelli’s consistency and maturity, particularly his performance in Monaco.
Verstappen said mistakes are inevitable for young drivers, but what matters is how they respond to them. He believes Antonelli has learned effectively from his early setbacks and is showing impressive growth.
The reigning champion also encouraged the teenager to stay true to himself rather than trying to imitate others, saying continued personal development will be key to unlocking even more success in the years ahead.
