Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable drives in recent Formula 1 history as the Mercedes driver charged from 19th on the grid to win a chaotic Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The 20-year-old Italian completed his recovery by passing team-mate George Russell with three laps remaining, securing victory on home soil and stretching his championship advantage to 66 points.
Antonelli’s comeback is the second-deepest starting position from which a Formula 1 grand prix has been won. Only John Watson has triumphed from further back, having started 22nd at the 1983 United States Grand Prix West.
Russell finished second after starting from the front row, while Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull. McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri followed in fourth and fifth, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton completing the top six.
Early Red Flag Opens Up the Race
Antonelli began the afternoon at the back after receiving an engine-related grid penalty, leaving him focused initially on limiting the championship damage Russell could inflict.
He quickly began climbing through the field and was already up to 12th by lap three when Charles Leclerc crashed heavily at Parabolica.
The Ferrari driver lost control while defending from Piastri, went into the barriers and caused the race to be stopped while repairs were made. Leclerc escaped without injury.
Before the interruption, Russell had taken the lead from surprise pole-sitter Pierre Gasly and appeared well placed to control proceedings.
The restart transformed the race.
Antonelli continued making rapid progress and soon reached the back of the leading group. Gasly began losing ground, allowing the Mercedes driver to move ahead before also clearing Hamilton and Piastri.
By lap 16, Antonelli had gone from the penultimate row to genuine victory contention.
Mercedes Team-Mates Fight for the Lead
Russell, Verstappen and Antonelli became locked in a tense battle at the front.
Verstappen briefly moved ahead of Russell on lap 11, only for the Mercedes driver to regain the position three laps later. Antonelli then found his own way past the Red Bull at the second chicane.
For several laps, the two Mercedes cars repeatedly exchanged positions as both drivers used the new hybrid power units’ overtaking and boost systems to attack and defend.
Verstappen remained close behind, ready to capitalise on any mistake.
Mercedes later instructed Russell to increase his pace and create separation from Verstappen, adding another tactical element to the fight between its two drivers.
The decisive strategic moment arrived when Lance Stroll stopped his Aston Martin at the first chicane, triggering a virtual safety car.
Antonelli’s side of the garage chose to pit for fresh tyres, with Verstappen making the same decision. Russell remained on track and committed to reaching the finish without another stop.
Fresh Tyres Turn the Race Around
Antonelli returned to the circuit in sixth position, around 15 seconds behind Russell, but the tyre advantage quickly became decisive.
He passed Gasly, Norris, Hamilton and Piastri while steadily reducing Russell’s lead.
As Russell’s tyres faded, Antonelli closed rapidly and was directly behind his team-mate with five laps remaining.
His first major attempt almost ended his challenge. Antonelli attacked at the opening chicane on lap 50 but ran onto debris away from the racing line and slid into the gravel.
The mistake cost him around 1.7 seconds, yet his pace on the fresher tyres allowed him to recover almost immediately.
Antonelli caught Russell again and completed the winning move between the Lesmo corners and Ascari, sweeping past the second Mercedes before pulling clear over the closing laps.
The victory triggered huge celebrations from the Monza crowd, with the Italian supporters acclaiming Antonelli after a performance that turned a back-of-the-grid start into a memorable home triumph.
Russell had to settle for second after controlling large parts of the race, with his late tyre degradation leaving him unable to resist his team-mate’s charge.
Antonelli’s victory not only delivered a landmark result on home soil but also strengthened his position at the top of the championship after one of the most dramatic races of the season.
