Mikel Arteta has agreed a new contract with Arsenal that will extend his stay at the Premier League champions and deliver a substantial increase in his salary.
The Spaniard’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, prompting months of negotiations over his future. An agreement was understood to be close earlier in September, and the final terms have now been settled.
Although the duration of the new contract has not been confirmed, it is expected to keep Arteta at Arsenal into at least his 10th year at the club. The 44-year-old took charge in December 2019 and has overseen the team’s transformation into Premier League title winners.
The agreement also includes a significant improvement to his earnings. Arteta’s previous contract was worth approximately £10 million annually, with a further £5 million available through performance-related bonuses.
Arteta had consistently expressed his desire to remain in north London, making it clear during recent discussions that he was happy at the club and wanted to continue working with his current colleagues.
His commitment comes after Arsenal secured their first Premier League championship in 20 years last season. The Gunners also came within a penalty shootout of winning their first Champions League title, an experience that has strengthened Arteta’s determination to pursue further European success.
Retaining the manager provides continuity for a squad built around his footballing philosophy and establishes a stable foundation for Arsenal’s next phase of development.
With his contractual future now settled, Arteta can concentrate on defending Arsenal’s domestic crown and pursuing the European trophy that narrowly escaped the club last season.
