Aston Villa Agree £38m Deal to Sign Joao Gomes from Wolves

Aston Villa are set to strengthen their midfield after agreeing a deal worth up to £38 million to sign Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Brazil international has already left Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Thursday before completing the move.

Villa will pay an initial £34 million, with a further £4 million included in performance-related add-ons.

The club has been searching for midfield reinforcements following the summer departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United in a £35 million transfer. Villa have also been dealt a major injury setback after Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury while representing Belgium at the World Cup, ruling him out until next year.

Gomes had attracted interest from Atletico Madrid during the transfer window, but the Spanish side were unable to finalise a move, allowing Villa to secure the 25-year-old.

The midfielder made 41 appearances for Wolves last season, although the club endured a difficult campaign that ended with relegation after finishing bottom of the Premier League.

Since arriving from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2023, Gomes featured 130 times for Wolves across all competitions and scored seven goals.

Villa are also close to completing another major signing, with Switzerland international Johan Manzambi expected to arrive from Freiburg in a club-record deal worth more than £50 million.
