Jude Bellingham produced a standout individual display as Real Madrid swept aside Malaga 4-0 to maintain Jose Mourinho’s perfect start since returning to the club.
The England midfielder opened the scoring in the 19th minute with an impressive solo effort. Picking up possession around 35 yards from goal, Bellingham drove forward, beat three defenders and finished beyond goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero for his second goal of the La Liga season.
The 23-year-old, who scored seven times as England finished third at the summer World Cup, was also heavily involved when Madrid doubled their lead seven minutes later.
After Herrero initially saved a shot, Bellingham directed the rebound back towards goal. The ball struck the Malaga goalkeeper before crossing the line, resulting in an own goal.
Madrid effectively ended the contest after half an hour. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered from the right and Kylian Mbappe met the cross with a powerful first-time volley to make it 3-0.
The hosts continued to control proceedings before adding a fourth deep into stoppage time. Vinicius Junior led a quick counterattack and pulled the ball back from the byline for Arda Guler, who converted from close range.
Bellingham’s influence extended beyond his goal, with Mourinho praising the midfielder’s standards, intensity and ability to raise the level of those around him. The Madrid coach also indicated that he wants Bellingham operating in areas where he can have a greater attacking impact rather than dropping too deep defensively.
Mourinho was equally positive about the developing relationship between Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius, viewing their technical quality, awareness and willingness to work together as central to Madrid’s attacking approach.
The Portuguese coach returned to Real Madrid this summer for a second spell in charge. His first stint between 2010 and 2013 delivered the Copa del Rey in 2010-11 before Madrid won the La Liga title the following season.
Sunday’s result gives Mourinho three victories from his opening three league games since returning.
Real Madrid sit top of La Liga with nine points. Barcelona can move level with them if they defeat Rayo Vallecano at home on Monday.
