Brighton Break Transfer Record to Land Croatia Defender Luka Vuskovic

Brighton have completed the signing of Croatia international Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham in a club-record deal worth £46 million, with the fee potentially increasing to £50 million through performance-related bonuses.

The 19-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the Amex Stadium, with Brighton holding the option to extend the agreement by an additional year.

Brighton had two offers rejected earlier in the summer before reaching an agreement with Spurs for one of Europe’s most highly regarded young defenders.

Vuskovic officially joined Tottenham in 2025 after the North London club secured his transfer from Hajduk Split two years in advance. However, he never made a competitive appearance for Spurs, spending last season on loan at Hamburg in Germany.

The teenager impressed in the Bundesliga, making 30 appearances and scoring six goals from defence. His performances earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award as well as a place in the league’s Team of the Year.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler said the club had monitored Vuskovic’s development for some time and believes he has the qualities to continue improving in the Premier League.

Hurzeler acknowledged the attention surrounding the transfer but stressed that the Croatian defender would need time to adapt to English football, adding that the club is confident he can handle the step up.

Vuskovic arrives as Brighton prepare for life without Jan Paul van Hecke, who has moved to Tottenham in a separate deal reported to be worth £52 million on a long-term contract.

Born in Split, Vuskovic progressed through Hajduk Split’s academy and made history by becoming the club’s youngest player to appear in Croatia’s top division at the age of 16. He also became Hajduk’s youngest-ever goalscorer.

On the international stage, Vuskovic has already earned six senior caps for Croatia, scoring once, and made his FIFA World Cup debut against England during last month’s group stage.
