Cape Verde kept their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage alive after earning an impressive 2-2 draw against Uruguay in an entertaining Group H encounter in Miami.
The tournament newcomers, who had already caught attention with a surprise goalless draw against Spain in their opening match, once again showcased their growing confidence on the world stage.
Cape Verde took the lead in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina’s long-range free-kick found its way through the Uruguay wall and into the net. The goal encouraged the Blue Sharks to push forward more aggressively, opening up a game that quickly became end-to-end.
Uruguay responded by taking advantage of the extra space. Maxi Araujo levelled the score with a diving header after a Cape Verde defender inadvertently redirected a cross back towards his own goal. The South Americans then moved ahead in first-half stoppage time when Agustin Canobbio converted from close range after being picked out by Araujo.
Despite struggling at times against Uruguay’s relentless pressing, Cape Verde continued to look dangerous and were rewarded midway through the second half. A defensive mistake by Mathias Olivera gifted possession to Helio Varela, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper before finishing into an empty net to make it 2-2.
Uruguay thought they had found a late winner through Federico Valverde, but his close-range effort was ruled out for offside. Both teams created further opportunities during stoppage time, yet neither could find the decisive goal.
The draw leaves Uruguay second in Group H and Cape Verde third, with both sides on two points from two matches and still firmly in contention for a place in the last 32.
Cape Verde’s display highlighted the belief growing within the squad. Unlike their disciplined defensive performance against Spain, they showed greater attacking ambition and repeatedly threatened on the counter-attack. Even in the closing stages, they continued searching for a winner rather than settling for a point.
With a final group match against Saudi Arabia still to come, Cape Verde have given themselves a genuine opportunity to complete a remarkable progression to the knockout rounds.
Uruguay, meanwhile, will head into a difficult final group fixture against Spain knowing they need a positive result after drawing both of their opening matches.
