Chelsea Complete £40m Geovany Quenda Signing as Alonso’s Squad Rebuild Continues

Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting in a £40m transfer as the club continues reshaping its squad under new manager Xabi Alonso.

The 19-year-old has signed an eight-year deal at Stamford Bridge, becoming Chelsea’s second confirmed signing since Alonso took charge. His arrival follows the £42m move for Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra.

Although Quenda officially joins during Alonso’s tenure, the agreement was originally reached in March 2025 while Enzo Maresca was still managing the club.

The Portugal Under-21 international is expected to immediately join Chelsea’s senior squad. Known for his versatility, Quenda can operate as a winger, attacking midfielder or wing-back.

The teenager has already spent time training at Chelsea’s Cobham facility this week, despite Alonso’s first official session with the full squad not taking place until Thursday.

Quenda said he was excited to begin the next stage of his career at Stamford Bridge and praised Chelsea’s commitment to developing young talent. He added that he hopes to contribute with his work ethic and mentality as the team targets future success.

The move marks Quenda’s first experience outside Portugal. He leaves Sporting after making 86 senior appearances, including 16 in the Champions League, having established himself in the first team under former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim.

Chelsea remain active in the transfer market, with the club holding talks over Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria and exploring a possible move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. The Blues were also unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Valentin Barco is also expected to complete a move to Chelsea after confirming his exit from sister club Strasbourg, with the club aiming to add further midfield depth.

Several players have departed Stamford Bridge during the rebuild. Marc Cucurella has moved to Real Madrid, Tyrique George has joined Everton, and Andrey Santos is set for a switch to Manchester United after a £50m agreement was reached.

Chelsea have also secured the future of academy player Jesse Derry, with the 19-year-old signing a new six-year contract before a planned loan move to Sporting.
