Chelsea Complete Jordan Henderson Signing on Two-Year Deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract after the 36-year-old agreed to terminate his deal with Brentford by mutual consent.

Henderson becomes the latest arrival in Xabi Alonso’s extensive summer overhaul at Stamford Bridge, with the former Liverpool captain describing the move as an opportunity he could not refuse.

“Given the size of the club, the manager who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said.

He added: “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

The experienced midfielder enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Liverpool, captaining the club to the 2019-20 Premier League title while also lifting the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After leaving Anfield in 2023, Henderson joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax in January 2024. He returned to English football with Brentford last summer and made 32 Premier League appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

A product of Sunderland’s academy, Henderson made his Premier League debut in November 2008 as a substitute during a 5-0 defeat against Chelsea.

On the international stage, Henderson has earned 91 England caps since making his senior debut in 2010 and has represented his country at seven major tournaments. He played in the Euro 2021 final, where England lost to Italy in a penalty shootout, and this summer became the first English player to appear at four different FIFA World Cups after coming off the bench in a 2-0 group-stage victory over Panama.

That proved to be his only appearance at the tournament. Henderson suffered a broken arm after falling awkwardly while attempting to jump over advertising boards following England’s last-16 win against Mexico, a match in which he did not feature. Earlier in the game, he had also been booked after protesting a refereeing decision while warming up.

Chelsea ended last season 10th in the Premier League, finishing one point behind Brentford in 9th and missing out on European qualification.

Henderson is Chelsea’s 10th signing of the summer under Alonso. The Blues have already agreed a club-record £117 million deal for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, signed England striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton for a reported £5 million, and brought in Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco.

The club has also strengthened its defence with Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, while right-back Marco Palestra joined from Atalanta for £42 million and winger Geovany Quenda arrived from Sporting for £40 million.

Chelsea’s other additions include striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, Brazilian left-back Denner from Corinthians and teenage forward Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.

Meanwhile, defender Trevoh Chalobah is set to leave Stamford Bridge after Como agreed a deal worth more than £30 million for the academy graduate.
