Chelsea’s late move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has fallen apart, leaving the Senegal international in France despite completing a medical ahead of the transfer deadline.
The Premier League club had agreed a deal worth about £47.1 million for the 22-year-old and expected the transfer to be completed before Tuesday’s 23:00 BST deadline. Camara had already undergone medical checks in France, but Monaco ultimately decided not to proceed with the sale.
Chelsea had previously seen two offers rejected before making progress in negotiations as uncertainty developed around Folarin Balogun’s proposed transfer from Monaco to Everton.
The London club were sufficiently confident of signing Camara that they allowed Enzo Fernandez to complete a £125 million move to Manchester City, matching the British transfer record.
However, shortly after the window closed, Chelsea were informed in writing that Monaco would no longer sanction Camara’s departure. The decision caused frustration at Stamford Bridge, particularly because the club were not given a clear explanation for the sudden change.
The collapse appears to have been closely connected to Monaco’s plans for Balogun. The Ligue 1 side had been expected to complete at least one significant player sale during the summer and reportedly preferred to generate funds through the United States striker.
When Balogun’s potential switch to Everton ran into difficulties, Monaco became more open to negotiating Camara’s exit and reduced their demands enough for Chelsea to reach an agreement at around £47 million.
The situation changed again once Balogun’s move appeared to regain momentum. Monaco then withdrew from the Camara deal, effectively ending Chelsea’s chances of completing the transfer before the deadline.
Camara had remained involved in Monaco’s first team throughout the negotiations, playing in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Marseille. Balogun, meanwhile, was not included in the squad for that match.
The failed deal leaves Chelsea without the midfield reinforcement they had expected to secure after Fernandez’s departure, while Camara will continue his season with Monaco.
