Chelsea have opened discussions with Atalanta over a potential move for highly rated teenage defender Honest Ahanor as Xabi Alonso continues to reshape his squad at Stamford Bridge.
The London club first showed interest in the 18-year-old earlier this summer while negotiating the signing of right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Chelsea have now stepped up their pursuit, with the Serie A side prepared to consider a sale if their valuation of around €40m (£34.3m) is met.
Ahanor only joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer, signing a three-year contract in a deal reportedly worth €16m up front, with a further €4m available in bonuses. Despite his age, he quickly became an important part of the first team.
Primarily used at left-back, Ahanor made 28 Serie A appearances during his first season in Bergamo and established himself as a regular starter. His development also extended to European competition, with the defender making his Champions League debut in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge in September.
His performances also brought international recognition. Ahanor received an Italy call-up in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece, further strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s most promising young defenders.
Chelsea’s interest comes during a busy first transfer window under Alonso, who took charge in July. The Blues have already made several major additions as they rebuild the squad around a mixture of elite prospects and experienced Premier League players.
England midfielder Morgan Rogers arrived from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m, while veteran forward Danny Welbeck and midfielder Jordan Henderson have also joined the club.
Ahanor would represent another long-term investment for Chelsea, while also giving Alonso an additional option on the left side of defence. Any agreement, however, is likely to depend on whether the Blues are prepared to meet Atalanta’s €40m asking price.
