Chelsea Weigh Move for Free-Agent John Stones as Defensive Reshuffle Continues

Chelsea are considering a move for experienced England defender John Stones after the centre-back became a free agent following the expiration of his Manchester City contract.

The 32-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs, with Inter Milan also monitoring his situation as he weighs the next step in his career.

Stamford Bridge officials are actively exploring defensive reinforcements this summer. Alongside Stones, Chelsea are in discussions over a deal for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix and are also evaluating Como defender Jacobo Ramon as part of their shortlist.

Any new arrivals are expected to be accompanied by departures in central defence. England international Trevoh Chalobah is in talks over a move to Como, while Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have both been made available for transfer as Chelsea look to streamline their squad.

Stones leaves Manchester City after a hugely successful nine-year spell following his £47.5 million move from Everton in 2016. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, he made 295 appearances and collected an impressive trophy haul, including six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

On the international stage, Stones has earned 93 caps for England and was part of the squad that secured a third-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Chelsea have already strengthened their squad this week, completing the £117 million signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The London club are also negotiating with Villa over a loan move that would see Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho head in the opposite direction.
