Christian Eriksen has reached an agreement with Wolfsburg to terminate his contract, bringing his time at the German second-tier club to an end just over three months after he collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who has not played since June, had been under contract until June 2027. His departure follows discussions with the club, with Eriksen expressing a desire to remain close to his family in Denmark.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in September 2025 after leaving Manchester United. He made 34 appearances during his time in Germany, experiencing a season in which the club faced both sporting challenges and the task of securing a return to the Bundesliga.
The former Tottenham and Inter Milan midfielder previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match against Finland at Euro 2020, which took place in Copenhagen in June 2021.
Following his latest health incident in June 2026, Eriksen has remained out of competitive football. His decision to leave Wolfsburg will allow him to spend more time with his family while his future in the sport remains uncertain.
Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, confirmed that the club had respected Eriksen’s wishes and agreed to release him from his remaining contractual obligations. Hecking also acknowledged the midfielder’s contribution during his relatively brief spell, highlighting the impression he made on his teammates, club staff and supporters.
Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg with an extensive career spanning several major European leagues. Before moving to Germany, he represented Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United.
At international level, he has earned 151 caps for Denmark, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced players.
Wolfsburg will continue their efforts to return to the Bundesliga following Eriksen’s departure, while the midfielder has yet to announce whether he intends to resume his playing career.
