Curaçao Sets Mid-2027 Deadline for Crypto Gambling Compliance Under New Rules

The Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA) has introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework for licensed online gambling operators that accept cryptocurrencies, giving businesses until the middle of 2027 to fully comply with the new standards.

The new requirements are designed to bring crypto gambling in line with international anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CFT) expectations. They apply to all licensed B2C operators handling cryptocurrency transactions and will become mandatory for every relevant group entity involved in crypto-related activities.

Under the framework, operators may only accept cryptocurrencies for legitimate gambling activities. They must establish dedicated crypto wallets that are separated from corporate or operational funds, while also implementing blockchain analytics tools capable of monitoring transactions and identifying suspicious activity. The regulator also expects businesses to maintain detailed transaction records and reconciliation procedures.

The CGA has also introduced restrictions on which digital assets can be used. Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, meme coins and unverified wrapped tokens will not be permitted under the new rules due to the higher compliance risks associated with those assets.

Rather than requiring immediate compliance, the regulator has adopted a phased implementation schedule. Within the first three months, operators must submit their crypto compliance policies. During the following six months, they are expected to complete risk assessments, carry out due diligence on crypto service providers and provide staff training. Full implementation of all technical and operational measures must be achieved by mid-2027.

The new framework forms part of Curaçao’s broader regulatory overhaul under the National Ordinance on Games of Chance (LOK), which replaced the previous licensing system with direct oversight by the CGA. The authority says the updated crypto standards are intended to strengthen transparency, improve financial crime controls and enhance confidence in the jurisdiction’s online gambling sector.
