Daniel Munoz Sends Colombia Into World Cup Knockout Stage With Winner Against DR Congo

Colombia secured their place in the World Cup knockout stage after Daniel Munoz’s second-half goal earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Guadalajara.

The South Americans dominated much of the contest and created numerous chances before finally breaking through in the 76th minute. Munoz latched onto a clever pass from Juan Fernando Quintero and saw his left-footed effort take a slight deflection, wrong-footing goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and finding the net at the near post.

The result gives Colombia a second consecutive victory and guarantees their progression from Group K as group leaders. DR Congo remain third in the standings and must defeat Uzbekistan in their final group match to keep alive any hopes of reaching the last 32.

Backed by a large and passionate crowd, Colombia started brightly and could have taken the lead within four minutes. After Mpasi parried an effort from Jhon Arias, Munoz fired the rebound into the side netting from close range.

The Crystal Palace wing-back thought he had opened the scoring shortly afterwards when he converted after his initial header had been saved, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Colombia continued to control possession and territory throughout the first half, repeatedly testing the DR Congo defence but failing to find a breakthrough. Their pressure continued after the interval, with Luis Diaz wasting a golden opportunity on 50 minutes when he failed to beat Mpasi in a one-on-one situation, while Arias sent the rebound wide.

As frustration began to grow, Quintero provided the decisive moment. His perfectly weighted pass found Munoz inside the penalty area, and the defender’s shot took a slight touch on its way past Mpasi to finally give Colombia the lead.

DR Congo pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages, but Colombia defended well and held on to claim a deserved victory.

While Colombia’s attack features stars such as Diaz and James Rodriguez, Munoz has emerged as one of the team’s standout performers at this World Cup. The 30-year-old has now scored in consecutive matches and was once again a constant threat down the right flank.

His intelligent movement, perfectly timed runs and attacking instincts have become a major weapon for Colombia. Having already demonstrated those qualities throughout his club career, Munoz is now showcasing them on the biggest stage.

Opponents are likely to pay much closer attention to him in the knockout rounds, but based on his current form, stopping him may prove easier said than done.
