Djed Spence Nears Tottenham Exit as Inter Milan Push for Deal

Inter Milan are closing in on a move for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, with negotiations progressing over a deal expected to be worth at least £25.6m (€30m).

The 26-year-old has become a priority target for the Serie A champions after strengthening his reputation with England at the World Cup. Spence featured eight times during the tournament and, after an uneven start, earned a starting role in England’s semi-final against Argentina.

His growing international profile follows a demanding season at Tottenham. Spence made 23 Premier League starts as the north London club narrowly avoided relegation and finished the campaign with 32 appearances on the left side of defence.

Since joining Spurs from Middlesbrough for around £20m in July 2022, he has played 85 matches for the club. Tottenham have now started assessing possible replacements as Inter continue negotiations.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi had previously made clear that he wanted Spence to remain in north London and considered him part of his long-term plans. The defender also signed a new long-term contract last year.

Competition for places, however, remains significant. Spain international Pedro Porro is currently Tottenham’s first-choice right-back, while Spence has increasingly been used on the opposite flank. He also played six World Cup matches at left-back for England.

Spurs strengthened that area earlier this summer by signing 32-year-old Scotland international Andy Robertson from Liverpool, further increasing the options available to De Zerbi.

With Inter pushing to complete a deal and Tottenham already exploring alternatives, Spence could now be heading for Serie A despite remaining under a long-term contract in north London.
