West Ham midfielder and Mexico captain Edson Alvarez has strongly denied allegations connecting him to the alleged kidnapping of a film producer in Mexico City.
Producer Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez has claimed he was abducted at gunpoint in the Polanco district of the Mexican capital in 2024. According to his account, he was forced into a vehicle by relatives of Jonathan Toache Bedolla, the former father-in-law of Alvarez.
Lopez Ordonez has not accused the footballer of directly participating in the alleged abduction. However, he has claimed Alvarez knew about the situation beforehand.
The dispute is understood to be connected to a documentary project about the midfielder’s life. Lopez Ordonez says he was hired to produce the film and remains owed around £150,000 for his work.
Alvarez responded publicly after the allegations attracted attention in the Mexican media, insisting he had no connection to the events described and rejecting any suggestion that he had knowledge of or responsibility for them.
The 28-year-old said his name and image had increasingly been associated with the case despite the absence of evidence linking him to the alleged incident. He also criticised coverage of the story, arguing that some reports had focused on generating attention rather than establishing the facts.
Alvarez indicated that he is prepared to consider legal action over claims he believes falsely connect him to the case. He said his priority remains his family and football career.
The midfielder has been a senior figure for Mexico since making his international debut in 2017 and currently captains the national team.
At club level, Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 and has since made 74 appearances for the London side. His playing time has been limited at the start of the current season, with his only appearance so far coming against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup.
