Elanga Strike Sends Sweden Into World Cup Knockout Stage Despite Japan Draw

Anthony Elanga’s superb second-half finish secured Sweden a place in the World Cup last 32 as Graham Potter’s side battled back from behind to draw 1-1 with Japan and seal qualification from Group F.

The result leaves Sweden third in the group on four points, enough to advance to the knockout stage, where they will meet one of France, Norway, Germany or Switzerland.

Japan also progressed after finishing second behind group winners the Netherlands, who defeated Tunisia comfortably in the other Group F fixture. The Blue Samurai will now take on five-time world champions Brazil in the last 32.

A quiet opening half offered little excitement as both sides appeared content to avoid taking unnecessary risks. Chances were limited, and the game lacked urgency before springing to life after the interval.

Japan broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Daizen Maeda following a slick attacking move. Ayase Ueda combined neatly with Ritsu Doan, whose perfectly weighted pass allowed the Celtic forward to finish from close range.

Sweden responded quickly. Just six minutes later, Elanga produced a moment of quality to restore parity. The Newcastle United winger, making his first start of the tournament, cut inside from the left before unleashing a powerful drive from the edge of the area. Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki reacted late and was unable to prevent the shot from finding the net.

The tempo eased after the second-half hydration break, but Sweden nearly snatched victory in stoppage time. Suzuki denied both Elanga and Alexander Isak with important saves to preserve Japan’s point and confirm their runners-up finish.

Sweden’s route to the knockout rounds has been far from straightforward. After finishing bottom of their qualifying group, Potter’s team reached the World Cup through the play-offs thanks to their Nations League ranking. A heavy 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands in their previous group match left their hopes hanging in the balance.

Faced with another difficult challenge against a disciplined Japanese side, Sweden showed resilience after falling behind. Elanga’s equaliser proved decisive in ensuring Potter’s side achieved their immediate objective of reaching the knockout stage.

The Scandinavian side will need to tighten up defensively if they are drawn against France in the next round. However, with attacking talents such as Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Elanga capable of making the difference, Sweden remain a team that could trouble any opponent.
