England captain Harry Kane has urged the national team to learn from another painful tournament exit after the Three Lions fell 2-1 to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, saying the squad must find the “final piece of the puzzle” needed to end years of near misses.
England looked on course for a place in the final after Anthony Gordon opened the scoring in the second half, but Argentina struck twice late on through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to overturn the deficit and eliminate Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Reflecting on the defeat, Kane admitted the disappointment would take time to overcome but insisted the squad must continue believing they can eventually lift a major trophy.
The Bayern Munich striker said England have spent the past eight years consistently challenging at the highest level but have repeatedly fallen just short when it matters most. He called on the team to process the setback, improve, and come back stronger.
England’s approach after taking the lead has come under heavy scrutiny. Critics, including former captain Wayne Rooney, argued the team became too passive and invited pressure instead of controlling the match. Tuchel also faced questions over his defensive substitutions after England managed only 12% possession between Gordon’s goal and Argentina’s decisive winner in stoppage time.
According to sources, several senior players were frustrated by the team’s late-game tactics. Tuchel, however, rejected suggestions that his side deliberately retreated, insisting it was never part of the game plan and acknowledging that controlling matches in that way is not yet part of England’s footballing identity.
The defeat continued a familiar pattern for England in major tournaments. Under previous manager Gareth Southgate, they surrendered an early lead before losing the Euro 2021 final to Italy on penalties, were beaten by Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, and lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Statistics from Opta also underline England’s struggles against elite opposition, showing they have been eliminated every time they have faced a top-10 ranked nation in the knockout rounds of a World Cup since 1998.
Despite the disappointment, Kane stressed that success requires resilience, saying the team must recover from setbacks and keep striving for glory rather than lose faith.
England’s tournament began with a 4-2 victory over Croatia before a goalless draw against Ghana and a 2-0 win over Panama secured top spot in their group.
They then came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the round of 32, edged past co-hosts Mexico 3-2 despite playing with 10 men, and overcame Norway 2-1 after extra time to reach the semi-finals.
The Three Lions will now conclude their World Cup campaign in Saturday’s third-place play-off against France, who were defeated by Spain in the other semi-final.
Several England players shared emotional reactions following the loss.
Jude Bellingham admitted he struggled to find the right words after the defeat but appealed for supporters to remain united, saying the togetherness shown throughout the tournament should continue beyond the World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder, who finished alongside Kane as England’s joint-leading scorer with six goals, also shared a poem written by team driver Michael Chandler that reflected the squad’s journey.
Morgan Rogers described the defeat as devastating after helping create Gordon’s opening goal, saying representing England at a World Cup fulfilled a lifelong dream and expressing confidence the team would return stronger.
Gordon echoed that sentiment, admitting he believed this squad had what it took to end England’s long wait for another major title and saying the disappointment would linger because of what the group had built together.
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham also backed England to respond positively, expressing confidence that Tuchel and his coaching staff would use the lessons from the World Cup to prepare the team for Euro 2028.
England will co-host the tournament alongside Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, with Bullingham saying the squad will have another outstanding opportunity to compete for silverware on home soil after reaching the finals of both Euro 2021 and Euro 2024.
