FA Backs Tuchel to Stay as England Turn Focus to Euro 2028

Thomas Tuchel will remain in charge of England despite the team’s World Cup semi-final exit, with the Football Association reaffirming its confidence in the German coach ahead of Euro 2028.

England’s hopes of reaching their first men’s World Cup final since 1966 ended on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to Argentina. Tuchel came under scrutiny for his substitutions as his side surrendered a 1-0 lead in the closing stages, but the FA has no plans to make a managerial change.

Tuchel, whose contract now runs through to the 2028 European Championship, said he remains fully committed to leading England into the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager signed a two-year contract extension in February after initially taking over in January 2025 on an 18-month deal aimed at winning the World Cup. While acknowledging the disappointment of falling short in the semi-finals, Tuchel said reaching the last four was still a significant achievement, noting that several leading football nations had failed to get that far.

England’s immediate focus now shifts to Saturday’s third-place play-off against France. A victory would secure the team’s best men’s World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed his disappointment over the semi-final defeat but praised the efforts of the players, coaching staff and supporters throughout the tournament.

Despite missing out on the final, England’s World Cup campaign is expected to be viewed positively within the FA, with the team’s progress reinforcing confidence in Tuchel’s long-term project ahead of hosting Euro 2028.
